1914 : England's War Office commissions an adapted Tielocken coat to meet new combat requirements. Epaulettes and D-rings are added, creating the trench coat. Half a million soldiers will wear the coat during World War I. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton sets out to conquer the Antarctic in August, clad in a custom Burberry helmet and tunic.
